DVD Commentary Meme!

I stole this from [livejournal.com profile] ewinfic, who stole it from [livejournal.com profile] bellonablack and now it's mine! Because I like talking about myself. ;-D

"Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection (and a fic/chapter title, please). I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track."

I can't promise it will be totally fascinating, and you might get one of those sections of the commentary when the director is just sitting in silence or babbles on about her cat or something, but you could get lucky! Play as many times as you like!

Confidence and power began to surge through every synapse of Sylar’s mind as he saw the naked worship in Luke’s eyes, the mirror of everything he wanted to be seen as. Hunger long-denied swept through him in a rising tide, and Sylar roared his triumph and return as his orgasm swept through him like wildfire. Luke drank it all in, cheeks bulging, dribbles of semen pushing past his lips as he tried to contain the overwhelming flood.

I wanted Sylar's "rebirth" to be almost like a physical change in his brain and body, with Sylar's memories physically sweeping out Nathan's memories, Nathan's mannerisms, and Nathan's desires. And then Luke takes all of that away from Sylar for him. The trigger for Sylar wasn't as much the physical sensations of the sex (because we all know Samuel was having Lydia totally tap him every night) but the visual of Luke looking up to him.

I wanted that eye contact to speak unsaid volumes, because I tend to like actions speaking louder than words.

From Hollow Man

“If he was… if he was…” Peter couldn’t say the words “pimping me out,” just swallowed and moved on. “I would have noticed! Sonya would have noticed. You weren’t…?”

“No, I did not join the Company until later. It was not me. It was Maury Parkman.”

“What about Sonya? What about me? Did he make me imagine her sometimes?”

Did my father have Maury impersonate my girlfriend just so some of the damned Company agents could get their rocks off? The very idea seemed too bizarre, too strange to take in all at once, even with Peter’s wide range of experience with strange. Even knowing the depths of his father’s cruelty and betrayal as he did, Peter hadn’t realized there might have been unplumbed depths to which Arthur Petrelli would sink.

“Peter, there never was a Sonya. She never existed. Sonya was the form Maury had the agents wear when they came to your room.”

The bottom dropped out of Peter's stomach, and he felt a roaring in his ears.

“Why?” Peter cried, when he could finally speak. He felt his throat choking shut, and tried to slow his harsh, ragged breathing. Could his father be that cruel, to have made Peter’s first romance, his first time, be nothing more than a trick of the mind?

“You wish to know everything?”

Peter’s fingernails scraped at the brick wall, and he looked over his shoulder at the half-hidden entrance to Carla’s House. He’d started to come here halfway through his freshman year at college, needing something he didn’t dare explain to a stranger, not with Sonya (there never had been a real Sonya) gone to college in California.

What else had his father done to him? How else had he betrayed him? For that explanation, Peter would give anything.

Ooo, Hollow Man! Right here I wanted to both show Peter breaking. We get shown the physical effects of the betrayal later and earlier in the story, but this scene was all about the emotional impact. Just the bald facts from a man who has absolutly no reason to lie and every reason to know exactly what he's doing.

Peter knows the Haitian isn't lying, whereas if Nathan or Angela or Bennet had told him, he would have room for doubt. So that makes it just that much more devistating, because there's no way to deny the knowledge.

Perversely, once he has the truth from a trusted source, Peter is going to pick at his own wounds until they're completely opened, so he asks the Haitian for more. Peter is rather perverse like that sometimes. I think he wants to be able to hate his father with a clear conscience.
